Curriculum @ Intervention

Curriculum Offer

Intervention offers a broad and balanced curriculum which focuses on supporting learners to re-engage with learning. Its core purpose is to provide a personalised, adaptive and inclusive learning experience that addresses barriers to engagement and achievement. Each learner undergoes an individual assessment at the start of their placement to establish baseline levels in literacy and numeracy. This informs a tailored learning package designed to enable learners to achieve their potential academically, vocationally, physically, and emotionally.

Intervention’s curriculum is designed not only to secure academic progress but also to develop behaviour for learning, foster a sense of responsibility for actions and future choices, and instil pride and aspiration for a positive future. Intervention aims to create a sense of belonging, both individually and as part of a group, so that learners can work collaboratively to be the best they can be.

Intervention’s curriculum includes the core subjects—English, Mathematics, Science, Art and Design, and Business—up to GCSE level in addition to PSHE, Citizenship and a broad range of vocational and enrichment learning opportunities.

‘Reading For Pleasure’ is seen as a priority and timetabled daily. In addition to traditional books, Intervention also uses an on-line library and newspapers to encourage engagement and to include different abilities and interests.

Our curriculum is based around each learner and incorporates the following 6 learning areas

Personal Development and Wellbeing

PSHE is central to the curriculum offer at Intervention and timetabled lessons are delivered by specialist teachers to ensure learners are fully equipped with the knowledge and skills to keep themselves safe and healthy, develop resilience, and prepare for life beyond school. It follows the PSHE Association’s recommended themes and includes statutory relationships and health education, ensuring compliance, inclusivity and relevance.

Via its timetabled Citizenship lessons and wider curriculum opportunities, Intervention fosters respect for diversity and community values, embedding British Values and promoting spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development (SMSC).

Careers education is an integral part of the Personal Development and Wellbeing programme at Intervention. Year 9 and 10 learners are offered a broad and well-structured range of encounters with external careers professionals, employers, and training providers to ensure that they receive accurate, current, and impartial information about the full spectrum of education, training, and employment pathways, while also experiencing meaningful workplace activities in line with statutory expectations. The programme is enriched using ‘Unifrog’- a high-quality online careers platform that supports personalised exploration and progression planning.  It is underpinned by the CDI Career Development themes ensuring that all young people are equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and insight to make informed, aspirational decisions about their futures.

Intervention’s learners have the opportunity of being involved in meaningful workplace activities in line with statutory expectations. Work experience placements have included: B Side Barbers, Rebound Electronics, Hair Off the Dog, Waitrose, and Busy Bees Nursery.

In addition to opportunities for work experience, mentoring initiatives like the ‘Dame Kelly Holmes Trust’ provide rich opportunities for personal development.

Intervention places a strong emphasis on mental health and well-being, with staff trained to provide emotional support and access to specialist services through the Emotional Health Academy. Learners and families benefit from additional support via the Family Support Worker and a qualified counsellor, available through referral.
