Ethos, Intentions & Objectives:
Ethos:
The vision of the mathematics department is to develop students’ understanding of mathematics, promote positive attitudes and apply skills with confidence. Mathematics is a valuable tool and it prepares students for adult life including employment, recreation and further study and training.
In the mathematics department every child matters and every student should be encouraged to develop within his or her capabilities.
How we Teach Maths
We always start each topic by revisiting previous topics. This not only allows us to assess the students’ understanding, but also helps remind them of their prior learning. The work begins with straightforward examples that they should have previously encountered. Again, this provides us with an opportunity to identify any gaps and misconceptions. For those who are confident, this is a revisit and consolidate exercise and takes very little time. The work develops, becoming increasingly challenging. Students are given time to practise the skills and correct mistakes. The work further develops, incorporating objectives from other topics. Finally, the students have learnt and practised the necessary skills and are well prepared to apply them independently and successfully in a GCSE exam question.
Intentions:
All students are given the opportunity to access a mathematics curriculum, which makes a relevant and strong contribution to education as a whole and particularly learning skills, literacy and numeracy.
